- Natural inorganic brown earth containing iron and manganese oxides, as well as lignites.
- Also known as Cassel Brown, Cassel Umber, Cologne Brown, Cologne Earth, Cologne Umber, Rubens Brown, Van Dyke Brown.
- Rubens and Anthony Van Dyke suuposedly used this pigment in their paintings.
